Organic Really is Better

October 2007

A 4-year long European study found organic food has found that it is more nutritious than ordinary produce and may help to lengthen people's lives.

Researchers grew fruit and vegetables and reared cattle on adjacent organic and nonorganic sites on a 725-acre farm attached to Newcastle University, and at other sites in Europe. They found that levels of antioxidants in milk from organic herds were up to 90% higher than in milk from conventional herds.

As well as finding up to 40% more antioxidants in organic vegetables, they also found that organic tomatoes from Greece had significantly higher levels of antioxidants, including flavo-noids thought to reduce coronary heart disease.

Professor Carlo Leifert, the co-ordinator of the European Union-funded project, said the differences were so marked that organic produce would help to increase the nutrient intake of people not eating the recommended five portions a day of fruit and vegetables. "If you have just 20% more antioxidants and you can't get your kids to do five a day, then you might just be okay with four a day," he said.

Leifert said the British government was wrong about there being no difference between organic and conventional produce. "There is enough evidence now that the level of good things is higher in organics," he said.

Dr. Grout's Comment:

This will put a big dent in the massive amount of PR spin we've heard over the years from big agri-business that factory farmed food isn't really all that different.

Commercial farming tends to emphasize the simple fertilizer equation N-P-K, meaning nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. NPK fertilizer makes plants shoot up for a time and look good, but then they begin to suffer from nutritional depletion. This is pretty much what has happened, as well, to the human population that relies on plants and animals fed with NPK. Selenium for example is an important mineral to have in the soil; without it, the rates of cancer increase. Soil quality matters. Given the growth in consumer demand for organic food, people increasingly understand that nutrition matters.

Red Lipsticks Contain Lead

October 2007

The "Campaign for Safe Cosmetics" reported that a third of the 33 red lipsticks examined by an independent lab contained a level of lead exceeding 0.1 parts per million which is the FDA's limit for lead in candy. The FDA does not set a limit for lead in lipstick.

red lipstickIn the list of lipsticks tested, the worst offenders scored higher than 0.1:
• L'Oreal Colour Riche "True Red" – 0.65 ppm
• L'Oreal Colour Riche "Classic Wine" – 0.58 ppm
• Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor "Maximum Red" – 0.56 ppm
• Christian Dior Addict "Positive Red" – 0.21 ppm

The lead tests were conducted by an independent laboratory last month on red lipsticks bought in Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Hartford, Conn.

The FDA said concerns about lead in lipstick have been raised occasionally in the print media and on the Internet. "These concerns have not generally been supported by FDA's own analysis of products on the market. In the present case, we are looking into the specific details of the issues raised," said Stephanie Kwisnek, a spokeswoman at the FDA. "We will need to confirm the factual basis of these reports independently in order to determine what action, if any, may be needed to protect public health."

"Consumers are exposed daily to lead when they eat, drink water and breathe the air," said John Bailey, an executive vice president at the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association. "The average amount of lead a woman would be exposed to when using cosmetics is 1,000 times less than the amount she would get from eating, breathing, and drinking water that meets EPA drinking water standards."

Dr. Grout's Comment:

By some estimates, women inadvertently eat about 4 lbs of lipstick in a lifetime.

Mr. Bailey might not mind a little more lead in cosmetics, but every woman should mind a great deal. Lead is a neurotoxin that can lower your IQ. Lead does not break down in the body and accumulates over time. We already get lead from other sources including mascara, hair dyes, toys, insecticides, lead crystal dishes and glassware, lead water pipes, metal candle wicks, milk, evaporated milk, porcelain glazed sinks and bathtubs, toothpaste, and breathing leaded gasoline. Detoxing lead from the body is not something you can do overnight.

California Bans Use of Phthalates in Children's Toys

October 2007

Associated Press reports, "California has banned toys and baby products containing more than a trace amount of [phthalate], a chemical used to soften plastics that scientists have linked to health problems." As of 2009, "any product made for young children that contains more than one tenth of one percent of phthalates...cannot be made, sold or distributed in California." This is the first state to impose severe limits on phthalates. The European Union and at least 14 other countries banned the chemical "after studies found that...[it] interferes with hormones and might lead to early puberty, reproduction defects and other health problems."

Lawmakers in Texas, Illinois, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, Maine, Connecticut and New York are expected to introduce similar legislation in the coming months, according to environmental and breast cancer groups that sponsored the California measure.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., wants to replicate the California prohibition nationally, although no time frame has been established, a spokesman for her office said Monday.

Dr. Grout's Comment:
Phthalates are a family of chemicals most often used as a softener of plastic. Open up a new, soft vinyl shower curtain and smell that "plastic" smell – that's phthalates. Some critics say the chemicals can make up as much as half of the material used to make plastic toys and are also used to make baby teethers.

Some hospitals in the United States are removing IV bags that contain phthalates.

Gretchen Lee, spokeswoman for the Breast Cancer Fund, said there is growing evidence linking phthalates to diseases including breast cancer.

Although industry spokesmen proclaim the safety of these chemicals, public opinion has definitely shifted toward "better safe than sorry." Too often industry waits for science to document – and lawyers to litigate – before dangerous chemicals are removed from the environment.

"Raw" Almonds are Now Sterilized

October 2007

The Almond Board of California voluntarily began to sterilize or "pasteurize" raw almonds in response to the 2001 and 2004 outbreaks of salmonella in almonds. The Board said, "In order to maintain the California almond industry's commitment to providing the safest and highest quality product possible for consumers, the Almond Board of Directors approved an aggressive 'Action Plan' to address food safety concerns. … This Action Plan is a voluntary initiative by the industry to further ensure the safety and quality of almonds; it has not been mandated … While contamination in almonds is not common, the industry determined that aggressive measures were necessary to prevent any other occurrences."

The Board says pasteurization simply reduces the presence of harmful bacteria on those almonds to safe levels while maintaining taste, quality and nutritional value.

Salmonella is unavoidably present in the environment. It is primarily spread through the feces of wildlife and domestic animals which may enter an orchard, but is also spread by contaminated water, poor fertilization methods and other agricultural practices.

Dr. Grout's Comment:
Raw foodists and the nutritionally savvy are up in arms about this one, and rightly so. Some 80-90 percent of the almonds grown in the world come from California. And they will be labeled "raw" even though they are not.

Pasteurization can be achieved by blanching (steam heat), dry roasting, or fumigating with propylene oxide. The FDA is recommending the use of propylene oxide.

The Material Safety Data Sheet for propylene oxide says: "Probable human carcinogen. May alter genetic material. May cause impaired fertility. Human mutagenic data. Harmful by ingestion, inhalation and through skin contact. Serious irritant. Very destructive of mucous membranes."

A pollution information site called "Scorecard" says that propylene oxide is in the top 10 percent of compounds that are hazardous to human health and to the ecosystem.

Propylene oxide has been banned in Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. One argument says that after fumigation, nothing is left to harm consumers. Yet the same argument has been made for pesticides and time and testing have proven that very wrong.

Nuts are not necessarily a good thing to eat raw, by the way. Nuts, like grains, legumes, and seeds, are rich in enzymes, but Nature also included enzyme inhibitors. Nature doesn't want the seed to germinate prematurely and lose its life. It wants to make sure that the seed is present in soil with sufficient moisture to grow and continue the species.

So when you eat raw seeds or raw nuts, you are swallowing enzyme inhibitors which will neutralize some of the enzymes your body produces. According to Dr. Edward Howell, an expert on enzyme therapy, eating foods with enzyme inhibitors causes a swelling of the pancreas. There are two ways to destroy enzyme inhibitors. The first is cooking; however, this also destroys the enzymes, and in the case of almonds, destroys a rich source of vitamin E. The more preferable way is soaking for 4 hours or more until the outer skin comes loose. This destroys the enzyme inhibitors and increases the enzyme content from a factor as much as six-fold. But you must soak truly raw nuts, not pasteurized nuts.

Despite industry and government claims, pasteurized food differs greatly from raw food. Here we see chemical carcinogens substituted for cleaner farming methods, and a disturbing blurring of the meaning of "raw" food.
